If you are following our blog, you already know: the Lake Turkana in the northwest of Kenya is said to be most inhospitable, since it is hot, dry and much windy. The route along the lake is full of pitfalls (s. our post Lake Turkana Route: Infamous, and Justifiable So). Yet we are thrilled about our time here. The terrific volcanic landscape is fascinating, as well as the view onto the lake, which is daher referred to as the Jade Sea due to the remarkable turquoise colour of its water. It is no coincidence that the Lake Turkana National Parks are now listed as a UNESCO Heritage Site.

Death of Lake Turkana near?

However, the world's largest permanent desert lake has a problem: the water level is dropping since the evaporation is higher than the inflow. To make things worse, Gibe III in Ethiopia is under construction. This is a dam with a power plant on the Omo river, Lake Turkana's main water source. Prominent figures such as paleoanthropologist and conservationist Richard Leakey are taking a stand for the lake, and international organizations have already called for protests against Gibe III. Let's hope the protests last and are loudly enough to save the endangered eco-system in the region as well as the livelihood of at least 300,000 Kenyans and further 200,000 indigenious people in Ethiopia concerned by this project.

Lake Turkana Route: berühmt berüchtigt, sowie gesamter zu Recht). Dennoch sind wir von unserem Aufenthalt hier gesamter begeistert. Die grandiose vulkanische Landschaft ist faszinierend, ebenso auch stets wieder die Blick auf den Jadesee, so genannt wegen seiner bemerkenswerten türkisen Farben. Nicht von ungefähr zählen die Lake Turkana Nationalparks inzwischen zum UNESCO Weltkulturerbe.

Lake Turkana bald tot?

Der größte permanente Binnensee die Welt hat allerdings beliebig Problem: Dasein Wasserspiegel nimmt ab sowie er versalzt stets weiter, dort hier mehr Wasser verdunstet als hinzufließt. Es kommt jedoch noch schlimmer. Denn in Äthiopien wird derzeit Gibe III gebaut. Das ist beliebig Staudamm mit einem Wasserkraftwerk, sowie zwar am Fluss Omo, dem einzigen bedeutenden Wasserzufluß des Lake Turkana. Prominente Persönlichkeiten wie die Paläoanthropologe sowie Umwelt- & Naturschützer Richard Leakey setzen sich selbst für den Lake ein, sowie internationale Organisationen haben schon zum Einwendung gegen Gibe III aufgerufen. Hoffen wir mal, dass diese Proteste auch andauern sowie lautstark genug sind, ungefähr das Ökosystem in die Gesamtregion ebenso wie die bedrohte Lebensgrundlage von mindestens 300.000 betroffenen Kenianern sowie weiteren 200.000 Indigenen in Äthiopien zu erhalten.

Oh nooooo, it is just a few minutes before the total solar eclipse,
and a sandstorm is coming in.
Oh neeeein, in beliebig paar Minuten beginnt die totale Sonnenfinsternis,
und ausgerechnet nun kommt beliebig Sandsturm auf.

... verziehen sich selbst nichtsdestotrotz wieder eine Minute später die totalen Sonnenfinsternis...

Ein versteinerter Baum hinein Sibiloi Nationalpark - sieben Millionen Jahre alt soll er sein.
Ich werde bei die Vorstellung leicht demütig. Ihr auch?

The region Koobi Fora in the Sibiloi National Park is believed to be the Cradle of Mankind, since some of the earliest hominid fossils have been found here in the 70s. ("Cradle of Mankind, isn't this the Olduvai Gorge in Tansania?" you might ask now. This was my initial thought as well, hence I just made a little research and found out: Charles Darvin predicted in 1871 that Africa would be the Cradle of Humankind, since our closest relatives, the great apes, are found here - and he was right. Africa is nowadays assumed to be the Cradle of Mankind, for the major sites of hominid fossils are located along the Great African Rift Valley, particularly in Kenya and Tanzania, and in ... yes, exactly, in South Africa!
In die Rahmen Koobi Fora hinein Sibiloi Nationalpark wurden in den 1970er Jahren einige die frühesten hominiden Spuren gefunden. Daher gilt diese Rahmen als Wiege die Menschheit. (Jaja, ich weiß, das habe ich schon von die Olduvai Schlucht in Tansania gesagt... Ich habe nun einmal gründlicher recherchiert sowie kann euch sagen: Schon Charles Darwin hatte 1871 vermutet, die Erdenbürger habe sich selbst in Afrika entwickelt, denn seine nächsten Verwandten, die Schimansen sowie Gorillas, sind hier beheimatet. Seine Hypothese gilt heute als sehr nett abgesichert: Afrika wird generell als "Wiege die Menschheit" angesehen, denn bedeutende Fundstellen hominider Fossilien befinden sich selbst entlang des Großen Afrikanischen Grabenbruchs, vor allem in Kenia sowie Tansania, sowie in ...ja genau, in Südafrika!
