Very early in the morning we arrive in South Georgia. Finally! We are looking forward to our first landing on Prion Island. But hey, what is the loudspeaker announcement? How disappointing. The winds are too strong and gusting to go out with the zodiacs, the small black inflatable boats. So off we go to our next point of interest, the former whaling station Stromness. Yet again the winds are gusting and we are not able to land. We check out the neighbouring bay Leith Harbour. Here, too, we cannot go ashore. However, the captain maneuvers the ship as close as possible in order to give us at least a view of the place which used to be the largest of the seven whaling stations in South Georgia.

Amongst young fur seal pups
Next we head back to Stromness, just to give it another try, and lo and behold, we are finally able to step foot on South Georgian ground! The wind is geräuschlos gusting, but no one really cares, as there are young fur seal pups laying all around, enjoying eingeschaltet extensive nap in the sun.

We make a walk to a waterfall and look up with rapt attention. From there, 102 years ago, Shackleton and his two companions had to climb down with the use of a rope to reach exhaustedly the whaling station and get help to rescue his stranded men on Elephant Island. However, nothing points out to the dramatic last hours of the most spectacular rescue operation in the history of the Southern Ocean. Back on the ship we head towards Hercules Bay. But here, too, we are welcomed by the katabatic winds, these nasty cold offshore fall winds, which make even a zodiac cruise impossible. Hmmm ... you can feel the disappointment growing on board, until ... yes, until we reach Prion Island again at around 6 pm with the fabulous news: The weather is getting better, and - yes! - we can go on land. Pheeeew, lucky us, since our permit is valid for today only.
Why is Prion lsland special?
A permission to enter Prion Island is not easy to receive, we are told. Why is that? We get a comprehensible answer to this question. The island is one of the only few accessible breeding grounds for wandering albatrosses on our planet! Aaaaaah!!! Now we all move extra quietly and carefully around the island. We are fascinated by these feathered flight specialists, which BTW hold the record for the birds with the largest wingspan. We can daher spot different species of petrels, yet it is particularly funny to watch the curious, sometimes quite self-confident young fur seals which lay relaxed on the boardwalks and platforms and show little interest to clear the way for some of us. An impressive sunset finishes our first day in South Georgia.

The next morning the weather has turned to our favour, good enough for a zodiac cruise in Hercules Bay at 5.45 (!) am. In the dense tussock grass we discover some well-hidden nests of Macaroni penguins. The first rays of the sun bring some elephant seals, king penguins and fur seals to life which are resting calmly on the beach below the waterfall.

Grytviken: for some impressive, for others rather depressing
Our next landing point is Grytviken, the 'capital' of South Georgia. The settlement was established 1904 as a whaling station. More than 54,000 whales and around 5,000 seals had been slaughtered and processed at this place until 1966, with at times up to 1,000 workers living here. Today the population consists just of two government officials, some scientists and a few staff members of the museum.
The rusty remains of old boilers, once used to boil up the whale carcasses, are silent witnesses of the dark past. The impressive South Georgia Museum with a souvenir shop is housed in the former villa of the whaling station manager. Next to it you can find a small post office. There is daher a well-preserved wooden church, known as the Whalers Church which was built in 1913, and last but not least a cemetery containing 64 graves, with Shackleston's last resting place as the most famous one.
Many of our fellow travellers see Grytviken in eingeschaltet heroic light as they associate the place with Shackleton. Martin and I associate this place rather with its sad history of the mass slaughter of the fascinating marine mammals.

Sitting together with seals and penguins
All the more reason for us to enjoy our afternoon landing in Godthul. At the beach we find so many Gentoo penguins and fur seals that Martin and I decide to skip the walk onto the hill. Instead, we just sit on the pebbles and watch the animals with great pleasure. Alas we have to get back on board earlier than scheduled, and guess why? Exactly, because of the 'katabatic winds' 😉.

Südgeorgien, atemberaubendes Paradies für Wildtier-Liebhaber
Endlich, endlich kommen wir frühmorgens in Südgeorgien an! Wir sind schon gesamt gespannt auf unsere erste Anlandung auf Prion Island. Doch leider macht die Lautsprecheransage unsere Hoffnungen zunichte. Der Wind ist zu wirkungsvoll sowie böig für beliebig Übersetzen mit den Zodiacs, den kleinen schwarzen Schlauchbooten. Also geht es gleich weiter zum nächsten Besichtigungspunkt, die ehemaligen Walstation Stromness. Aber auch hier hat die Wind aufgefrischt sowie lässt kein Anlanden zu. Wir probieren es mit die Nachbarbucht Leith Harbour. Doch auch hier können wir nicht eingeschaltet Anbaufläche gehen. Immerhin ist es möglich, uns vom Schiff aus einen Eindruck von die ehemals größten die sieben Walfangstationen auf Südgeorgien zu verschaffen.

Danach probieren wir unsere Glück noch einmal in Stromness, sowie siehe da, es ist wahrlich möglich: Wir betreten zum ersten Mal südgeorgianischen (heißt das wohl wahrlich so?) Boden. Es ist zwar noch stets böig, doch das stört wohl niemanden. Denn zu schön ist es, die vielen jungen Pelzrobben zu beobachten, die überall am Strand sowie hinein Ried herumliegen sowie die wärmende Sonne genießen. Wir wandern zum Fuße des Wasserfalls sowie blicken hier andächtig später oben. Von dort hatten sich selbst vor 102 Jahren Shackleton sowie seine beiden Gefährten noch in letzter Mühe abseilen müssen, bevor sie völlig entkräftet in Stromness ankamen, ungefähr Mithilfe für ihre Mannschaft auf Elephant Island zu holen. Ein historischer Ort also, eingeschaltet dem jedoch Null hinweist auf die dramatischen letzten Stunden die spektakulärsten Rettungsaktion in die Erzählung des Südpolarmeers. Zurück auf unserem Schiff gehts gleich weiter zur Hercules Bay. Doch auch hier tun uns die katabatischen Winde, diese fiesen kalten ablandigen Fallwinde, einen Strich durch die Rechnung. Wir können wieder nicht von Bord gehen. Ohjeee, das kann jawohl noch was werden ... So manch beliebig Fresse wird hoch sowie länger, bis ... ja, bis wir gegen 18 Uhr wieder vor Prion Island erreichen mit die erfreulichen Nachricht: Das Wetter hat sich selbst gebessert. Wir können mit den Zodiacs rüberfahren. Was für beliebig Glück, denn unsere Permit ist ausschließlich für den heutigen Tag gültig.

Am nächsten Vormittag haben wir Glück mit dem Wetter. So tun wir ungefähr 5.45 (!) Uhr mit den Zodiacs eine kleine Tour durch die Hercules Bay. Im dichten Tussock-Gras können wir so manche nett versteckte Nester die Goldschopfpinguine entdecken. Die ersten Sonnenstrahlen bringen dann auch langsam Leben in die wenigen See-Elefanten, Königspinguine sowie Pelzrobben, die sich selbst am Strand unterhalb des Wasserfalls entspannt ausruhen.
Grytviken: für einige beeindruckend, für ungleich eher deprimierend
Unser nächster Anlandungspunkt ist Grytviken, die 'Hauptstadt' Südgeorgiens. Hier wurde 1904 eine Walfang- sowie -verarbeitungsbasis gegründet. Bis 1966 wurden auf dieser Station über 54.000 Wale sowie rund 5.000 Flossenfüßer abgeschlachtet sowie verarbeitet. Zeitweise lebten beinah 1.000 Einwohner vor Ort, heute sind es nur die Zwei Regierungsbeamte, beliebig paar Museumsangestellte sowie Forscher.
Die verrosteten alten Kessel zur Tranproduktion sind stille Zeugen die düsteren Vergangenheit. In einer Villa, die damals vom Manager die Walfangstation bewohnt wurde, befindet sich selbst beliebig sehenswertes Museum mit Souvenirshop, daneben beliebig kleines Postamt. Etwas abseits liegt die nett erhaltene Whalers Church. Die kleine Kirche wurde in vorgefertigten Teilen von Norwegen hierher gebracht sowie 1913 eingeweiht. Westlich die Walstation kommt man zum alten Friedhof, wo auch Ernest Shackleton seine letzter Gelassenheit fand.
Vielen Mitreisenden bleibt die Ort aufgrund des Antarktisforschers in ehrfürchtiger Erinnerung. Auf uns beide macht Grytviken eher einen deprimierenden Eindruck. Und das hat nicht mit dem Regenfall zu tun, die zwischenzeitlich aufgezogen ist, sondern vielmehr mit die traurigen Historie des Massenabschlachtens die faszinierenden Meeressäuger.

Fasziniert von Pinguinen sowie Pelzrobben
Umso mehr genießen wir unsere Nachmittags-Anlandung in Godthul. Am Strand tummeln sind so viele Eselspinguine sowie Pelzrobben, dass Martin sowie ich uns entscheiden, auf die kleine Wanderung zum Hügel zu verzichten. Stattdessen setzen wir uns lieber auf die Kieselsteine sowie beobachten den Tieren fasziniert bei ihrem Treiben zu. Leider müssen wir vorig als geplant zurück eingeschaltet Bord, sowie ratet mal warum? Genau, wegen die 'katabatic winds' 😉.
