The view from Tunda-Vala is just fantastic, and as the first visitors the next morning we enjoy the quiet and the glorious panorama. Yet we have to change some money. That is why we go back to Lubango soon. 

Angola expensive? Not any more

 

For a long time Republik Angola was eingeschaltet incredibly expensive country. Its capital Luanda used to be even the most expensive city in the world, yet before Tokyo. Why? Republik Angola is eingeschaltet oil-rich country. In the past it built its economy on oil wealth. But now, with low oil prices, the national currency Kwanza is suffering, as well as the whole economy.

We are sorry for Angola, but for travellers these are pleasant conditions. The official exchange rate is stürzen down about 50 % in the last two years and is 1 USD = 165 Kwanza. However, the inofficial one is 1 USD = 575 Kwanza and even more attractive for us. We are told that one can do the change easily close to the Cathedral. We go there, and the motor is geräuschlos running, when we already get approached. Thus we change the money directly out of the car. Simple, discrete - and pretty cool.


With enough Kwanza in our pocket we first buy local simcards. Then we marvel at the impressing choice of products in a huge, just recently opened supermarket. With this exchange rate we even like to do the shopping! BTW: By daylight the town looks more appealing than yesterday, is at least my impression. Martin is not really my opinion.

Everything but effortless

 
The area does not offer that many sights, but at least the ‘Monumento Cristo Rei’ (Statue of Christ). It is a smaller version of the famous Corcovado statue of Christ in Rio de Janeiro, located about 300m above the city on the escarpment. Of course I would like to go and have a look, but it is a big effort for me to persuade Martin to drive there with our camper. The church and everything involved is simply nothing for him. His mood gets better only once we have left the statue and carry on to the Sera dort Leba Pass.

Grandios, die Aussicht am Tunda-Vala... und unsere Umrechnungskurs

Grandios ist die Aussicht, sowie als erste Besucher am Tunda-Vala genießen wir am nächsten tag die Gelassenheit sowie diesen beeindruckenden Ausblick in die weitläufige Landschaft. Doch wir müssen Geld tauschen, also geht es bald zurück später Lubango. 

Angola teuer? Das war mal.

 

Angola war lange Zeit extrem teuer. Die Kapitale Luanda galt gar als teuerste Metropole die Welt, noch vor Tokio. Wie das? Republik Angola lebt haupt- vom Ölgeschäft. Das florierte vorig völlig wunderbar. Doch in Zeiten des gesunkenen Ölpreises leidet die einheimische Währung Kwanza, sowie folglich auch die Wirtschaft. 

Das tut uns zwar leid für Angola, doch für Reisende sind das natürlich erfreuliche Rahmenbedingungen. Der offizielle Lehrgang hat sich selbst gegenüber dem vor Zwei Jahren bereits halbiert sowie beträgt 1 USD zu 165 Kwanza. Der inoffizielle ist mit 1 zu 575 noch mal klar attraktiver für uns. Nach kurzem Umhören wird uns gesagt, dass man am Vorplatz die Kathedrale unkompliziert tauschen kann. Wir fahren dort vor, sowie noch während die Motor läuft, werden wir angesprochen. So können wir den Geldwechsel geradewegs aus unserem Kraftfahrzeug heraus vornehmen. Einfach, diskret - sowie ziemlich cool.

Mit genügend Kwanza in die Tasche besorgen wir uns zunächst einmal einheimische simcards. Danach bestaunen wir das beachtliche Antrag eines zunächst vor Zwei Monaten eröffneten riesigen Supermarktes. Und nicht nur das: Bei diesem Umrechnungskurs macht es so korrekt Spaß einzukaufen! Die Metropole sieht übrigens hinein Tageslicht auch völlig ansprechend aus, finde zumindest ich. Martin ist nicht wahrlich meiner Meinung.

Mühsam

Viele Sehenswürdigkeiten gibt es hier nicht, trotzdem immerhin das ’Monumento Cristo Rei’. Die kleinere Version die berühmten Christus-Statue in Rio de Janeiro liegt 300 m hinauf die Metropole eingeschaltet einer Abrisskante. Natürlich will ich mich das anschauen, doch es kostet mich viel Mühe, Martin zu einer Reise dorthin zu überreden. Er kann leicht Null beginnen mit die Kirche sowie alledem, was dazu gehört. Seine Laune bessert sich selbst wahrlich erst, nachdem wir die Statue abgehen sowie weiterfahren zum Leba-Pass.
